Exercise: View from the Balcony

Now it’s your turn. Imagine that you’re in the theater of your mind’s interpretations and you’re moving from section to section in the theater. From each vantage point, you have a slightly different view of the stage before you. Use the blank View from the Balcony Worksheet and follow these steps to loosen your mind’s grip on a particular negative interpretation:

Briefly describe the event along with your negative interpretation.

Rate the degree to which you believe your interpretation is correct (0 to 100 percent, whereby 100 percent means you completely believe it).

Brainstorm five to ten other possible views or explanations for the event.

Rate the likelihood that each alternative explanation is true (0 to 100 percent, whereby 100 percent means it’s completely true or accurate).

Re-rate the degree (0 to 100 percent) that you believe the negative interpretation is correct. Does the strength of your belief decrease as you consider different explanations or views of the event?
